We like to have an active Discord. Only DM other members for personal matters. Whenever possible ask questions or talk to other members in the regular channels.

This creates an active Discord, if everybody is talking via DM. The place will look like a graveyard.

When you have questions, you’re unlikely to be the only one with that question. Asking your question in the open is more helpful for other people.

The opposite is also true. When you ask a question in the open, other people can read it and they might help out.

I can’t speak for the other admins and everyone is free to ask me anything. There are no stupid questions, well, at least not many. So ask away.
But I often get swamped in questions via DM. That’s fine, except for the DM part for three reasons:

The first reason is most questions can be answered by other people as well. In many cases better than I can. If you ask your question in public anyone can read it and anyone can help you.

The second reason is that I get the same questions over and over again. If people ask questions in public, there would be no need for that.

The third reason is transparency, we strive to be an open community. Cronyism and backroom politics lead to disaster and almost caused the end of MSF.
